Beijing sightseeing (Aug 10, 2016)

Some pics from our tour in the city yesterday! We went to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven and saw an acrobatics show. Also ate some delicious dumplings for lunch (my favorite was the pork/shrimp combo of course).

I'm traveling with all Tufts students in my year! I didn't know any of them before the trip, but everyone seems really nice!

Compared to 6 years ago, when I traveled to Beijing with my family, the sights we saw today seemed like they hadn't changed much. The most noticeable difference was that they put railings near the edges of the walls around the Temple of Heaven, so the "echo walls" could no longer echo- I don't remember if it was like this 6 years ago.

Here's my room- we have doubles just for the two weeks in Beijing before we have our singles in Hangzhou

The 2016 Rio Olympics are going on! I've been able to watch just a little bit at night before I go to sleep; I've caught some highlights. I heard about Michael Phelps doing well and then also getting the silver in butterfly to a guy from Singapore and saw Katie Ledecky was winning everything! Yep Simone and the women's gymnastics team were great as expected. Heard about the upset to Djokovic in tennis but didn't know about Serena's upset! :(

A couple more pics! We went to the Great Wall. It was a little different from the previous time I went with family. We climbed a different part of the wall than I remembered and started with a steep trail leading up to the wall. It was interesting because we avoided a lot of tour groups, but we didn't really get as much of the "classic" great wall view you normally see in pictures.

Also took a boat ride at the Summer Palace

We finally tried some delicious "Beijing kaoya" (Beijing's famous peking duck)! We had lunch with our teachers (the two women on the left) after the last day of class. The duck was served on a fancy platter with multiple fixings and dipping sauces, like hoisin, green onion, cucumber, sugar, pickled plum, and horseradish. For bread you could choose either the sesame rolls or the classic pancake like bread. It was really yummy!

In the middle platter, there were 6 different kinds of Chinese desserts! My favorite was this glutinous rice flour one, kind of like mochi with red bean paste in it. It was sweet and the rice part was rolled up like a carpet, so it was fun to eat. :)

Finally some yummy food! Sadly most of the food we ate in Beijing, mainly at the campus canteen, was super greasy, salty, and drenched in sauce. :( We found only a couple dishes we liked, including dumpling soup and fried rice. Even for the meals that the directors took us out for, we almost had the exact same dishes every time (kung pao chicken and some interesting spicy stir fried chicken/pork shreds with mushroom and bamboo), which got a bit boring.

We had some free time one day, so Ming, Jennifer, Anh, and I visited this indoor mall and grabbed frozen yogurt at a waffle shop!

Hooray to Pengyou men (friends)!
