Nanjing (Aug 30, 2016)

Here are some pics from this past weekend's trip to Nanjing, ancient capital of the southern part of China!

We went to the Confucius temple, where we saw lots of Chinese kids trying to take pictures with Confucius (probably for good luck)! We were told that near this temple, a lot of students gather to take the rigorous "gao kao" (the infamous high school exam that almost completely determines which colleges you can go to).

We climbed up lots of stairs to reach a cool pagoda with a great view of the city!

Then we ate a vegetarian lunch including noodles and mushroomy dishes (tofu in the shape of shrimp and pork too!), kind of like the "Buddha's feast" dish my mom loves.

We also went to Chiang Kai Shek's office. He was the leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party who was eventually defeated by the Communist Party; he was then exiled to Taiwan where he started his own nation there.

Lastly we climbed (again) up to Sun Yet Sen's mausoleum (former Nationalist Party leader before Chiang Kai Shek).

I really liked the view from the top looking down. So many colorful umbrellas.

I liked Nanjing overall, although I wish we had had more of a chance to explore the city on our own too- there was a lot of sight seeing. Next time I'd like to go for longer!

The food we've had in China so far is not bad! We've had a couple really nice meals, like the peking duck lunch from a couple weeks ago and one fancier dinner at a Nanjing hotel. Much of the food we've had has been pretty greasy and saucy though, which is hard to get used to. Many of the veggies are soaked in oil, and our dinners consist mostly of carbs (rice, noodles, bread) with little bits of meat and veggies. I've found some good dumpling soup at the cafeteria in Hangzhou, which is not too oily.
