Xian (Aug 16, 2016)

We went to Xian over the weekend and saw the amazing Terra cotta warriors and Wild Goose Pagoda! The terra cotta soldiers were just as I remembered them. There may have been a bit more excavation since 6 years ago, but our group went through so quickly because it was SO hot in the tented display area (probably above 100 degrees F).

There's even a terra cotta mold of Obama!! Hahah. Apparently anyone can go to the terra cotta shop and have their picture taken on all sides (for a price of course) to have themselves made into terra cotta.

We also visited a mosque at Xian's Muslim Quarter!

It's actually not been too humid in Xian, just hot hot hot! Much nicer right now in Beijing. Hangzhou, however, is supposed to be hotter (like Xian) and more humid. 😵

I like our group a lot! Everyone's really nice- makes sense because we're all Tufts kids haha. People are always down to hang, whether we're getting a meal, playing cards, or having jam seshes. My roommate is JJ, the guy in the yellow shirt. He's a good guy.

Our group as a whole mostly speaks English. I had kind of been hoping we would do a language pledge because it would help us improve our speaking fluency (which is one of my biggest challenges), but it would be hard since we've all taken Mandarin for different numbers of years. It's kind of too late to start a language pledge at this point since everyone for the most part is already speaking English. On the flip side, I do think it makes it easier to get to know each other when we're speaking English because sometimes it's hard to express ourselves fully only in Mandarin. I still try to speak Chinese as much as possible when I'm ordering food or buying things.
